Leni Sinclair fled from communist East Germany when she was 18 years old and made her way to Detroit, Michigan, where she enrolled at Wayne State University. In 1964, Sinclair co-founded the Detroit Artists Workshop and began photographing avant-garde jazz artists like Cecil Taylor, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and many others. Leni married fellow student John Sinclair and continued to be heavily involved in the counter culture revolution by photographing bands such as the MC5, Iggy Pop, and the Stooges. Leni Sinclair helped organize the “Free John Sinclair” concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1971, headlined by John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Bob Seger and Stevie Wonder where John Lennon performed his song, “John Sinclair,” about Leni’s husband. Leni Sinclair’s historically iconic photos have appeared in countless newspapers, magazines, books, LP and CD covers. We are proud and honored to present to you some prints of these music legends. C’est à l’âge de 18 ans que Leni Sinclair quitte l’Allemagne de l’Est et s’installe à Detroit (Michigan) pour suivre un cursus à l’Université de Wayne. En 1964 elle co-fonde « the Detroit artist workshop » et s’intéresse au jazz d’avant garde photographiant des artistes comme Miles Davis et Thelonious Monk. Elle se marie alors à John Sinclair et s’investit fortement dans la révolution contre-culturelle aux côtés d’ Iggy Pop, MC5, The Strooges et bien d’autres. Après avoir tissé des liens forts avec de nombreux artistes de ce courant, en 1971 Leni organise le concert de soutien : « Free John Sinclair » à Ann Arbor (Michigan) et dont les têtes d’affiches sont John Lennon, Yoko Ono ou Stevie Wonder et où John Lennon interpréta la chanson « John Sinclair » en hommage au mari de Leni. Comme un témoignage historique d’une vie passée aux côtés de musiciens devenus légendaires, nous sommes honorés de vous présenter cette série de portraits intemporels.
