Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and is known for its coastal beauty and historical architecture. The city was able to thrive and become one of the wealthiest cities in America, because of its rice plantations, cotton plantations, and access to Northern and foreign markets across the Atlantic. All of the labor used to work on the plantations and to build the city’s infrastructure was made by enslaved Africans directly imported from West Africa. Additional slave labor included African-Americans who were owned by the municipality or “hired out” (rented) to the city by their Master, and “free” people of color, that were required by law to work for the city one day a week for free.

The Gordon Parks Foundation 12th Anniversary Awards Dinner and Auction was held on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Cipriani 42nd Street. Event co-chairs were Kenneth and Kathryn Chenault, Alicia Keys and Kasseem « Swizz Beatz » Dean, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Karl Lagerfeld, Leonard Lauder and Judy Glickman Lauder, Valerie Jarrett, Usher IV and Grace Raymond, Kendrick Lamar, and Alexander Soros. We honored Ta-Nehisi Coates, Ava DuVernay, Sherrilyn Ifill, Sally Mann, and Jamel Shabazz. Ronald O. Perelman was presented with the Patron of the Arts Award.

Jamel Shabazz was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of fifteen, he picked up his first camera and started to document his peers. Inspired by photographers Leonard Freed, James Van Der Zee, and Gordon Parks, he was marveled with their documentation of the African American community. In 1980, as a concerned photographer with a clear vision he embarked on a mission to extensively document various aspects of life in New York City, from youth culture to a wide range of social conditions. Due to its spontaneity and uniqueness, the streets and subway system became backdrops for many of his photographs.

Né en 1949 à New York, amérindien d’origine « Cree » Ernie Paniccioli grandit à Brooklyn où il côtoie ceux qui deviendront de véritables légendes du Hip Hop. Il commence par prendre en photo les grafittis et devient peu à peu le photographe officiel de groupes comme Public Enemy, The Native Tongue, Salt N’ Peppa ou encore Notorious Big. L’histoire le rapprochera de Jamel Shabazz et Joe Conzo faisant de ces trois street photographes le collectif le plus représentatif et authentique de New York.

The images are in both black and white and in rich color and span the age of people form infant to the elderly. In addition to the visual splendors of the book are the erudite essays by Paul Farber, Akintoka Hanif, Terrence Jennings and Sohail Daulatzal.
